The young man is absorbed in his work of cutting and polishing a ruby. The tools are hand and heart driven, the bowls of the grinding slurry at his side, frozen in this moment, as he inspects his work.
A limited palette of colors is used to describe the moment, create repetition and unity and to describe form. The composition is comprised of repeating diagonals and transitioning colors to lead the eye through the work.
This painting is reminiscent of a trip to India and Sri Lanka, and hangs in the artist’s studio.
Collection the artist.
